Loveliest hello! If you’re reading this entry, it’ll probably take you few seconds to think of the date this entry was written hehe. I have to admit I am probably a little too late into making a stamp of notes on my weekly reflections. Forgive me but - Ugh, this has always been a struggle of mine. I am a procrastinator at heart (not that I enjoyed being one, I promise!) Our first lecture befell on the 3rd week (thank you Malaysia for the public holidays’ generosity). Before I entered the class, I had hesitations about learning this subject. “Macam susah je subject ni” – my first thought exactly. Let’s face it, when I first heard the word ‘Innovation and Technology’ – and I just oop (Twitter reference).
The first lecture was conducted by Mejar Jasmay. To god I shall be thankful for not coming late because had I been late to class; I’d probably got chickened out (trust me; you wouldn’t wanna be late attending his class). He is a funny man nevertheless. Now this just makes me think, is this how anyone who has serviced with the national service is like? They’re scary but in a good way kind of scary... (Let’s just pray he won’t ever cross path with my Weebly hehe) just like any fatherly gesture, he advised us on the importance in disciplining ourselves. Discipline leads to success that you could have never achieved even if you are a step late – coming late to class. And that ladies and gentlemen, just proves how punctuality is essential! Okay enough talking and let’s get into it - According to the well known economist J.K. Galbraith, technology means, “systematic application of scientific or other organised knowledge to practical tasks”. Innovation on the other hand – an upgrade change of an idea that is newly introduced that creates value and a new dimension of performance. Technology has impacted almost every aspect of life today, and education is no exception. In many ways, technology has profoundly changed education. For one, technology has greatly expanded access to education. In medieval times, books were rare and only an elite few had access to educational opportunities. Individuals had to travel to centres of learning to get an education. Today, massive amounts of information are available at one’s fingertips through the Internet, and opportunities for formal learning are available online worldwide. Access to learning opportunities today is unprecedented in scope thanks to technology. Now that everything is moving paralleled to the 21st century, a lot have changed since. Education now has far greater values and students of this decade, might not struggle as much as our ancestors did. With the assistance of technology, things are made possible to be learned. Education is now shade in a light of excitement now that we can incorporate innovations in the learning process such as Gamification, Augmented Reality, 3D Painting and etc. However, students who live in rural areas might not benefit these experiences as much due to the lack of facilities that are being offered. As future educators, I truly believe that we need to equip ourselves with the knowledge of the benefits of technology and know when and how to use it in education. We need to reach the finishing line even before our students have begun running, seeing how far more advanced they are than us. Just like when a little kid comes to you and instead of greeting you (which you were probably expecting such gesture) the first thing they asked you was “nak main phone” I mean...the Alpha Generation is really something else. Sincerely, Umairah
